British Couples non-Monogamy

Why British Couples Are Ditching Monogamy (And Loving It)

Monogamy used to be the gold standard. One partner. Forever. White picket fence, shared Netflix password, missionary till the end. Some UK couples are exploring consensual non-monogamy, although preferences vary and this article does not suggest that one relationship structure is becoming the norm.

Consensual non-monogamy can appear in many kinds of relationships. It separates agreed emotional commitments from sexual exclusivity, but it is only consensual when everyone involved understands and freely agrees to the arrangement.

What’s driving the shift?

People may consider consensual non-monogamy for different personal reasons, including:

  • Burnout in long-term sex lives – Let’s be honest, routine is a killer. Some couples discuss opening their relationship during a dry spell, but changing the relationship structure does not guarantee renewed desire or resolve underlying problems.

  • Better communication tools – Apps, podcasts, and even relationship coaching now make it easier to talk about boundaries and desires without it turning into a bust-up.

  • A cultural reset on shame – Gen Z and millennials are more open than ever about kink, fluidity and ethical non-monogamy. That attitude is rubbing off on everyone else (pun intended).

But is it actually working?

For many couples, yes—and not just sexually. Research does not show that one relationship structure is inherently more satisfying for everyone. Outcomes depend on factors such as informed consent, communication, compatibility and how boundaries are handled.

One woman told us:

“We opened our relationship after 12 years. I thought I’d be jealous, but I was mostly relieved. I didn’t have to pretend I was still in the mood all the time—and now I actually am.”

It’s not a free-for-all

Let’s be clear—this isn’t about cheating with a trendy new label. Ethical non-monogamy means setting rules, checking in, and putting consent front and centre. For some couples, it means swinging. For others, it’s the occasional third in the bedroom, or dating separately with honesty baked in.

And for those thinking it’s all orgies and chaos? Most of it is still Takeaways and cuddles—just with more freedom to explore.

At Always Under, here are some pleasure products couples may consider while exploring together:

  • Time Lag 2 Delay Spray – a desensitising delay spray; follow its label and do not expect a guaranteed duration.

  • Electric Fellatio Gloss – an oral-play product; use only as its label directs and stop if irritation occurs.

  • Deep Throat Spray – an oral-use desensitising spray; follow the label dose and timing, avoid using reduced sensation to push past discomfort, and stop if irritation or swallowing difficulty occurs.

  • Tighten Gel – a topical sensation product; follow its label and do not expect a guaranteed tightening or performance result.

Discreet delivery. Zero judgement. Very British.
